Generative engine optimization is the work of being cited as a source when an AI engine generates an answer. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini.

It’s one of three surfaces inside the AI Search practice. The other two are SEO (the blue-link surface) and AEO (the lifted-as-the-answer surface). The work that wins on one surface mostly feeds the others. The tactics differ enough that each surface needs its own attention.

Built on SEO. Not separate from it.

The technical hygiene, the structural work, the authority signals. None of it goes away. It’s what every AI search surface is built on. If that foundation is broken, the AI surfaces have nothing to stand on.

Some industry voices declare SEO dead every cycle. The reality is the opposite. SEO is the foundation that lets AI search find your domain in the first place. GEO is what gets added on top, not what replaces it.

The industry hasn’t settled on a single name for the new work. GEO, AEO, AI SEO, Generative Engine Optimization, AI Search Optimization. The practitioner truth is more boring: it’s the same craft working a wider surface area, with different tactics for different surfaces.

Here’s how it works. AI Search is one practice with three modes. SEO ranks you in lists. AEO lifts your content as the answer. GEO cites you as a source. All three rest on the same foundation. The work that wins on one mostly feeds the others; the tactics differ enough that each needs its own attention.

GEO is the work of understanding and engineering generative results. Reporting on them is the floor. Shaping them is the practice. It has three components.

Cohort visibility

Most monitoring tools watch your brand alone. The work here watches your brand alongside the four to six competitors prompted in the same buyer questions. Sentiment, citation rate, source distribution. Yours and theirs, side by side.

Source attribution

Citations come from everywhere the models read. Your own site, competitors, directories, Reddit threads, YouTube, third-party articles. They’re not equally useful. The work is mapping which URLs drive which kind of mention, so you know which ones actually matter.

Action levers

Two real levers most of the time. Tighten the language on your own site so the LLMs paraphrase you back accurately. Place content on third-party sources the models actually read. The choice depends on what attribution found.

Seven fair questions.

Is GEO just rebranded SEO?+

No. GEO and SEO share fundamentals: technical hygiene, structured content, authority. They diverge on the unit of success. SEO competes for a position on Google’s results page. GEO competes for being inside the synthesized answer an AI generates. The fundamentals overlap. The tactics, the metrics, and the surfaces don’t. Anyone telling you SEO is dead is selling you something. Anyone telling you GEO is the same as SEO has stopped looking.

How is GEO different from AEO?+

Closely related, in 2026. AEO is the work of being lifted as the direct answer or named as a source. GEO is broader. It includes the cohort and narrative-shaping work that decides which brands AI talks about, in which terms, and how the surrounding sentiment lands. I run them as one practice. Do you guarantee my brand will be cited?+

No. The models change weekly. I don’t promise citations, sentiment lift, or any specific outcome. What’s real is the methodology, the tracker, and the work. The numbers move or they don’t. You see them either way.

What if my SEO foundation isn’t in order?+

I start with the audit. If the fundamentals are broken, we fix those first. GEO on a weak foundation is a waste of money.

How do you measure success?+

Three numbers, in order. Your recommendation rate against your peers in the cohort. Your sentiment score, broken into enthusiastic recommendations (Strong+), positive mentions, neutral mentions, and mixed signals. And the source distribution behind both: which URLs are driving which band. Citation count is the floor. The other three are the signal.

Why isn’t “we get you cited” enough?+

A brand can be cited a hundred times this month and still lose. The cohort moved faster. The citations were paraphrasing a third-party article that mischaracterizes you. The sentiment was neutral when it needed to be enthusiastic. Citation count is the easiest number to grow and the easiest one to misread.

Can I hire you for the diagnostic only?+

Yes. The cohort baseline and attribution work runs as a standalone in five weeks. If the action roadmap surfaces levers your own team would rather pull, that’s fine. The diagnostic is the part that’s hardest to do without the tracker. The lever work itself is normal SEO craft.
